How Tariffs Will Affect Cocktail Prices & Ingredients This Season (and How to be the Smartest Sipper in the Room)!

If you’ve noticed your favorite cocktails creeping up a few dollars lately, you’re not imagining it — the cocktail world is getting a shake-up of its own this season, courtesy of fluctuating import tariffs. This also significantly impacts the prices of cocktail must-haves, garnishes, and produce. From exotic spices to off-season fruits, many of the ingredients behind your favorite sips are facing higher costs. Here at Liquid Lab, we’re very cognizant of price fluctuations in the market as we do hundreds of mixology events each season, and we’re also feeling the pain, but don’t worry — we’ve got the scoop (and a few tricks up our shaker) to keep your happy hour both delicious and budget-friendly.

Let’s start with where it really stings: ‘imported spices and specialty fruits’. Bartenders rely on those bold, aromatic flavors from cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg (especially during the fall and winter season) — but these imports now carry tariffs as high as 50%, making them some of the costliest components in your glass. Add fruits like ‘kiwi and berries’, heavily imported from New Zealand, Chile, and Mexico, and suddenly your favorite berry-forward cocktails might pack a little extra cost along with their punch. Even reliable staples such as limes and cucumbers are feeling the pressure from weather swings and shipping volatility.

Ingredient Risk & Cost Ranking

(as of fall-winter 2025/2026)

(Most Expensive Least Expensive)

Imported Spices (cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, peppercorns) → High tariffs (20–50%)
Kiwi → ~90% imported; high shipping volatility
Berries (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry) → Off-season price spikes
Limes → Volatile supply from Mexico
Cucumbers → Winter imports = moderate risk
Pomegranates, Grapefruit, Pears, Figs → Mixed tariff exposure
Apples, Cranberries, Pumpkin, Citrus, Herbs → Mostly domestic, stable, and affordable

What does that mean for your bar tab or Instacart bill? Expect cocktails featuring exotic spices or imported fruits — like a spiced Old Fashioned or any exotic Margaritas — to cost a little more this season. But there’s good news: domestic heroes like apples, cranberries, pumpkins, and locally grown herbs remain steady in price and are easy to source. That’s where creative mixology shines — shifting toward local, seasonal ingredients that deliver flavor without the import fees. As is tradition, please see one of our original Liquid Lab NYC recipes below :)!

One of our favorite “tariff-proof” creations this season is the Ginger-CranMinJ Mule — an easy and light (affordable cocktail) that proves you can sip smart. Please see preparation and proportions notes below:

In the Glass end of your Shaker:

Muddle 4-5 Mint Leaves and then Add:

2 oz vodka (or gin)

1 oz organic cranberry juice

½ oz lime

Slash of ginger simple syrup (or Top with Ginger Beer)

Shake vigorously, then strain into an iced Highball Glass or iced Mule Mug. Top with soda (or Ginger Beer, if you didn’t use the Ginger Syrup). Finally, garnish with a Fresh Mint sprig and a Lime wheel. The result? A bright, refreshing drink that celebrates domestic ingredients — no tariffs required.

So while global trade may stir things up behind the scenes, your next cocktail doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Think local, seasonal, and clever, and let Liquid Lab NYC show you how to craft next-level cocktails that taste like luxury without the markup.
